MagnetSchools.us is a directory of magnet schools and schools that offer a magnet program in the United States, built from federal school data rather than from submissions or advertising.

What this directory covers

The subject of this site is the magnet program. A school appears here as a magnet school because the federal Civil Rights Data Collection recorded it as one, and the listing says which of the two kinds it is:

Charter status is recorded as an attribute of a school where the data reports it, and is shown as secondary information on a listing. It is not what this directory is a directory of, and a charter school is never presented here as a magnet school.

Across 280 counties and equivalent areas, 2,415 schools currently carry a magnet classification here: 1,517 whole-school magnets and 898 schools offering a magnet program to part of their students.

Where the information comes from

Two federal collections sit behind a listing, they are from different years, and neither confirms the other. They are named separately everywhere on this site for that reason, and are never combined into a single "last updated" date.

Why the years matter

Federal education data is published on a lag, and the two collections do not move together. The Common Core of Data is the more current of the two, so enrollment, grade span and contact details are relatively recent. Magnet classification is not: the 2021-22 Civil Rights Data Collection is the most recent federal collection that records magnet status at all.

That has two consequences we would rather state plainly than have you discover:

• A magnet program that started after the 2021-22 collection will not appear here yet. An area showing no magnet school means none was identified in that collection — not that none exists.
• A school listed here may have changed or ended its program since. Where a listing is older, unconfirmed, or held only as a historical record, the page says so rather than presenting it as current.

Always confirm admissions, deadlines and current program details with the school or district before acting on anything you read here.

Corrections and updates

We would rather show less and be right than show more and be wrong. Where the federal record is uncertain, the listing says what is known and what is not, instead of filling the gap with a guess.

If a listing is wrong or out of date, there are two routes, and both are read by a person:

• Use the Update School Information link on the school's own page to send a correction against that specific record. Submitting an update needs a free account, so a change can be attributed.
• Contact us for anything else — a school that is missing entirely, a page that should not exist, or a question about a source. No account is needed.

A school we do not list at all can be submitted through add a school listing.

Corrections change what a listing says about a school. They do not change what the federal collections recorded, and the source and year shown on a page always describe the collection itself.
